Washington council adopts 15 mph speed limit for Macswoods subdivision

The Washington City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance on Aug. 5, 2024, amending Chapter 18, Section 102 of the municipal code to set a 15 mph speed limit on all streets within the Macswoods subdivision.
The change follows a request from Police Department staff and concerned residents; during the public-comment period resident Alex Woolard asked the council to reduce the speed limit in Macswoods to 15 mph. Council discussion noted an initial proposal to reduce the speed to 25 mph before a motion to change the wording to 15 mph was made by Mayor Pro tem Anthony Tyre and seconded by Councilmember Richard Brooks.
Councilmember Lou Hodges then moved to adopt the ordinance as revised; Mayor Pro tem Anthony Tyre seconded. The council recorded a unanimous vote in favor of the ordinance.
The ordinance text amends the citys nonhighway streets section to state: "No person shall operate a vehicle in excess of fifteen (15) miles per hour on the following portions of street, to include all the streets within the Macswoods Subdivision." The minutes do not record any dissenting votes or conditions attached to the adoption.
The councils next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9, 2024. The minutes record that the meeting adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
