The Rock Springs City Council on July 15 approved several personnel hires, event permits and public-works requests and heard multiple public comments raising safety and Civic Center concerns.
During petitions, resident Mark Delong told the council a local roofing contractor was storing metal scraps at Marchant & Thompson streets and said he worried wind could blow the scraps off the property and injure someone. Jack Weimer, speaking for the Old Timers Civic Center nonprofit, thanked city staff for outreach but urged objectivity about an out-of-state assessment firm, saying some firms have closed other properties in the past. Danielle Rushing invited council members and residents to the Sweetwater Prevention Coalition’s monthly meeting, noting remote participation options.
On personnel, councilors approved filling a vacant Chief Building Inspector position after Paul Kauchich, Director of Engineering, Operations & Public Services, said the current inspector is retiring on Aug. 15. The council also approved filling an Equipment Maintenance Mechanic position, one police officer vacancy and two firefighter vacancies; the police and firefighter motions were recorded as carried as read in the minutes.
Council approved a road closure of South Main Street from Bank Court to C Street for the 2025 Main Street Market season (4 p.m.–7 p.m., concluding Sept. 4) and granted multiple malt beverage permits for Sweetwater Speedway race dates and a temporary serving-area extension for the Pour House Saloon during a July 19 event. One malt-beverage permit motion recorded an abstention by a councilor in the meeting minutes.
The meeting minutes record motions and any stated abstentions for each action. Several councilors also provided community-event updates before adjourning at 7:52 p.m.
What happens next: Staff will proceed with hiring and permit logistics; public-safety concerns raised during petitions will be logged for follow up by appropriate departments.
