Rock Springs council approves playground and trails grant applications and a special-event alcohol permit

The council authorized Parks & Recreation to apply for a $70,000 Blairtown Park playground grant and a $50,000 trails grant, and approved a one-day alcohol permit for a block party in Bunning Park.
At its Aug. 19 meeting the Rock Springs City Council authorized Parks & Recreation to apply for a Wyoming Youth Community Foundation grant of $70,000 to replace playground equipment at Blairtown Park and to apply for a Wyoming State Trails Program grant of $50,000 to revitalize and improve trails and trail-adjacent facilities.
JJ Syvrud, Director of Parks and Recreation, told councilors the Blairtown request is intended to replace dated playground equipment. Councilor Zotti moved both grant requests; Councilor Demas and Councilor Thompson seconded respective motions and both carried unanimously.
Council also approved Lews, Inc.’s request to serve alcohol in Bunning Park for the Subrok Block Party on Aug. 20, 2025; the motion was unanimous. Mayor Max Mickelson and staff said the City directs grant-seeking priorities and that Merchant McIntyre has been instrumental in locating federal and national grant opportunities for the City.
The approvals authorize staff to pursue the specified grants and to permit the one-day event with alcohol service; funding awards and implementation details will be determined if and when grants are awarded.
