Commission recommends permit limited to emergency vehicles for ambulance-sales business

The Smyth County Planning Commission on Oct. 27 recommended that the Board approve a Special Use Permit for Northwestern Emergency Vehicles to sell used ambulances at 4429 Lee Highway (several tax parcels listed). Staff said the property is zoned Agricultural/Rural and that a special-use permit is required for automotive sales.
Richard Hamby, partner with Trinity Ambulance Service and a partner in Northwestern Emergency Vehicles, said DMV licensing requires a prescribed number of parking spaces and specified hours of operation before the state license can be issued. Neighbor Stan Bystrek said he did not oppose the request but asked that the permit be limited to ambulances only.
After the public hearing Commissioner Joel Pugh moved to recommend approving the special-use permit with the condition that only emergency vehicles may be sold. Commissioner Hazel Wagoner seconded the motion. The commission recorded a 5–0 vote in favor (two commissioners absent). The recommendation will go to the Board of Supervisors for final consideration.
