Commission recommends approval of several Pratt parcels and one McGuire parcel for industrial zoning

In April the commission recommended rezoning multiple Pratt-family parcels in Atkins from Agricultural/Rural to Industrial to support an adjoining company's expansion; in July it recommended approval of Gerald McGuire’s adjacent parcel rezoning to Industrial. Votes were unanimous among commissioners present.
At its April 28 meeting the Smyth County Planning Commission recommended approval of four map amendments to rezone multiple parcels owned by members of the Pratt family in Atkins from Agricultural/Rural to Industrial. Representative Charles Walter Pratt said the owners were negotiating a sale to an adjoining industrial entity that needs the land for expansion. The commission voted to recommend approval; the motion passed with all voting members in favor.
On July 28 the commission considered a related request from Gerald D. McGuire to rezone a 0.5-acre parcel (adjacent to the Pratt properties) from Agricultural/Rural to Industrial for similar expansion reasons. After staff confirmed the parcel adjoined previously rezoned properties, the commission recommended approval of McGuire’s map amendment as well.
Both recommendations will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors for final action; the commission recorded votes and findings in the minutes.
