Council raises cemetery workers’ pay, asks staff to return with equipment quotes

Chair Maya Scribe summarized May hours and projected seasonal costs: at current rates, projected cemetery care for the season was about $7,700 plus payroll taxes, totaling approximately $10,234; a proposed $3/hour raise would increase that total to about $12,000. Scribe said the cemetery staff had been willing to continue at the lower rate but recommended a modest increase to recognize their work.
"I would like to entertain a motion to raise the pay of the cemetery workers," Scribe said; a motion was made and approved by voice vote.
Separately, cemetery staff asked for capital items — a mower with a bagger, a trailer and a utility side‑by‑side — to support in‑town maintenance. Staff reported a cemetery capital outlay balance of roughly $21,000 and overall admin room of about $14,000 that could be used to fund some or all of the purchases. Councilors favored gathering three bids and returning with firm numbers in July rather than approving immediate purchases.
Councilors also discussed operational details (mowing, seeding, spot watering) and expressed appreciation for the cemetery crew’s work, instructing staff to include placeholders in the budget and to present final purchase recommendations next month.
