Between January and December 2017 the Smyth County Planning Commission conducted its regular business, electing officers for 2017, setting the regular meeting calendar, recommending a proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors, adopting operating procedures and the 2016 Annual Report, and considering several minor and routine land-use items.
Notable administrative actions included the election of Norman Sparks as Chairman, Joel Pugh as Vice Chairman, Robbie Doyle as Secretary and Becca Creasy as Clerk (votes recorded at the Jan. 26 meeting). The commission set meetings for the fourth Thursday at 6:00 p.m. for calendar-year 2017 with tentative November and December exceptions. Commissioners recommended the Board approve the proposed 2017-2018 budget and adopted operating procedures with a revision to fee language.
The commission approved the final plat for Fox Valley Trestle Estates (March 23) and recommended approval of Brandi Heath's request to rezone portions of two parcels from Residential to Agricultural/Rural (June 22). The commission also recommended approval of Laurel Creek Campground and Outpost LLC’s application to build a 10' x 100' barn for transient campers (March 23).
These actions were largely uncontested; where follow-up was required, staff was directed to forward recommendations to the Board of Supervisors for final action or to ensure standard permitting and engineering steps are completed.
