The Smyth County Planning Commission on Jan. 26 recommended approval of a special-use permit to allow Thornton and Star Sexton to expand Sexton’s Inc., a nonconforming welding shop located beside 540 Kelly Hill Road (Tax Map No. 48-A-150A).
Zoning Administrator Clegg Williams explained the shop predated the zoning ordinance and that the owners sought permission to construct a 40-foot by 50-foot addition. Mr. Sexton apologized to the commission for building the addition without first obtaining permits and submitted a petition signed by neighbors in support. Three neighbors—Luther Williams, Suzanne Fields and David Fields—spoke in favor of the request. No opposition was recorded.
Commissioner Joel Pugh moved the recommendation for approval; Commissioner Robbie Doyle seconded the motion. The commission voted 7-0 in favor (Sparks, Spence, Wagoner, Shepherd, Pugh, Davidson Jr., Doyle). The recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors for final action.
