Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority invites Madison County to join; no required contribution but voluntary funding requested

Representatives of the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority briefed Madison County commissioners on the authority’s corridor planning and invited the county to consider joining by passing a resolution and appointing a director.
Dan Bucks, a board representative, said the authority — formed under state law to expand rail transportation — is sponsoring a study of a corridor connecting the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest and added that the southern route could serve communities along the county’s southern edge. "We're here today just to provide information, but to welcome Madison County," he said, and described potential benefits including safer travel, economic development and workforce training.
Bucks and Jess Peterson said membership is governed by county resolutions and board appointments; they emphasized that there is no required financial contribution to join but that the authority solicits voluntary contributions from member counties and partners. Jess Peterson said public meetings and minutes are posted on the authority’s website and that meetings are open to public participation.
Property owner Kay Counts asked how the public would be involved and when the proposed route and environmental impacts would be available; Bucks replied that formal board and committee meetings are public and that the authority plans robust community engagement and will maintain meeting minutes and videos online.
A commissioner asked to place a draft resolution on the next Tuesday agenda for formal consideration. No county decision was taken during the work session.
