The Kent County Materials Management Planning Committee deferred a full goal-planning session April 16 after time ran out and heard a preview from Sydney Smith of Byrum & Fisk of the facilitation process the consultant will use at next month’s meeting.
Members were told the consultant will provide an ordered list of proposed goals before the next meeting; committee members were asked to submit any pressing missing goals to Matt McPherson for inclusion. The meeting included examples of likely goals: short-term food-scraps drop-off locations within about five years and, longer term, curbside food-scraps collection in five to 10 years. Presenters urged the county to encourage business partnerships and technologies rather than pursue county-specific solutions.
DJ Droski, representing the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, emphasized the importance of establishing continuous recycling data and consistent key performance indicators to measure progress. Staff warned that collecting annual, mapped recycling rates will be challenging, particularly because small-business and commercial streams are not consistently separated in available data.
No formal goals were adopted at the meeting; staff said goal details will be circulated in advance of the next meeting for member review.
