Committee discusses enrollment projections, recruitment and possible special-education transition cohort

The Chebeague Island School Committee discussed enrollment sustainability and recruitment strategies at its Nov. 18 meeting.
Superintendent Aaron Townsend presented mainland-family survey results and updated enrollment projections. Committee members discussed possible future cohort structures, overall enrollment targets, tuition levels and the importance of outreach in Yarmouth; staff will prepare a recommendation on enrollment numbers, cohort design, tuition and the recruitment process for the committee’s next meeting as a first discussion.
Separately, Townsend told the committee he had received an email from the Maine Department of Education inviting districts to join the next cohort of districts planning to transition special-education services for 3- and 4-year-olds from Child Development Services (CDS) to local districts ahead of the required date. Staff are discussing whether to pursue that opportunity and will bring a formal action item to the committee for approval if they conclude it would be beneficial before the participation deadline.
No vote or formal commitment on enrollment policy or the Department of Education cohort was recorded in the minutes; the committee directed staff to return with formal recommendations.
