Code enforcement reported an update on Madison’s vacant and abandoned property registry during the June 15 Board meeting.
Staff said there are 42 active cases, 23 of which have registered and 17 of those registered owners submitted abatement plans. Of those 17, staff said only one owner has begun the required work; six registered properties now meet standards and remain monitored. The average time on the registry for active cases is roughly 347 days; for those with abatement plans the average is about 373 days. The city has assessed nearly $9,000 in penalties and liens across 14 properties.
Staff told the board they will continue to monitor conditions, pursue penalties or liens for noncompliance and improve communications to increase property-owner engagement and abatement velocity. The mayor and board members emphasized the program’s importance and urged continued enforcement to remove blighting conditions from neighborhoods.
