Waynesville police report ALICE training, K9 school walkthrough and Drug Take Back Day

Chief Gary Copeland reported a random K9 walkthrough at Wayne Local Schools, Officer Mermann completed ALICE training and will train others and teachers, the village received $8,154.68 from the Attorney General for officer training, and Drug Take Back Day is set for April 26.
The council received updates from the police department on recent training, school safety activities and planned community events.
Chief Gary Copeland said the Warren County K9 Association conducted a random walkthrough at Wayne Local Schools; because the walkthrough is intended to be random, parents were notified only after the school went into lockdown. Copeland said the police were impressed with teachers' response during lockdown.
Copeland reported the Village received $8,154.68 from the Attorney General's Office related to officers completing Continuing Professional Training. Officer Mermann completed ALICE training (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate), will be able to train other officers and teachers, and will be part of a three-officer diamond formation alongside Lt. Bledsoe and Chief Copeland to cover school approaches. Mrs. Connie Miller asked which officers would be present in a threat response; Copeland named Officer Mermann, Lt. Bledsoe and himself.
Chief Copeland said he will seek a quote to replace the oldest cruiser and expects an ordinance for that purchase to appear at the next meeting. He also noted Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
