Resident urges Waterloo Local to retire No. 16, proposes scholarship in former student's memory

The commenter said the player was informally remembered by alumni and that, when he recently saw someone wearing the same number, he learned the number had never been formally retired. He asked the board to consider an official retirement of the number for football only, or an honorary designation, and to work with the family on the name and structure of a scholarship.
Board members did not take immediate action during the public-comment period. The speaker said he would welcome the family's guidance and understood no decision would be made at that meeting.
The request came at the start of the meeting, after the board opened with condolences for recent student deaths and a moment of silence. The meeting proceeded into routine reports and a lengthy consent and action agenda that included personnel approvals, vendor agreements and a bid award for water-treatment plant work.
