Board hears legislative update: SB 104 effective Feb. 25, HB 8 and HB 214 require new board policies

The presenter said Senate Bill 104, which addresses facility restroom requirements per gender, has been signed and becomes effective Feb. 25; the district reported it already has the facilities and compliances discussed last spring. House Bill 8 requires districts to produce a Parents' Bill of Rights describing transparency around curriculum and student activities (with a July 1 deadline) and a related release-time policy for religious instruction (due April 18). House Bill 214, which addresses political-bias concerns in curriculum and staff conduct, must be adopted by Jan. 25; the board’s attorney will provide recommended language. The presenter also flagged a new board policy for over-the-counter medication administration due by March and expulsion-guideline policy required by April.
Board members were told attorneys will supply required policy language for prompt adoption where statutory deadlines apply.
