Retired teachers present grant to Waterloo Local educator for special-needs entrepreneurship program

Jim Mon, representing the Forge County Retired Teachers Association, presented a $500 teacher grant and certificate to teacher Kimberly Steel for a "Student Entrepreneur Opportunity" program designed for special‑needs students.
"We began this program six years ago and this year we are proud to announce that we have one of your teachers, Miss Kimberly Steel, who is going to be one of our recipients of one of our $500 teacher grants," Jim Mon said during the meeting. He described the grant-funded project as a life‑scale business exercise: students will learn to count money, decide what to order, and operate a small popcorn‑sale business during lunch or after school.
The association also awards scholarships and has been giving $2,500 scholarships to students pursuing education for 30 years, Mon said. Board members and the superintendent thanked the retired teachers for supporting classroom innovation and student learning.
The certificate was presented at the start of the board meeting; Mon asked that the grant money be spent during the current school year and handed the funds to the district treasurer for administration.
The board offered congratulatory remarks to Steel. No formal vote was required to accept the certificate presentation.
