The Mount Pleasant Planning Board on June 15 approved a three‑story mixed‑use building at 423–429 Commerce Street in Hawthorne after a public hearing that drew no members of the public.
Applicant representative Tomaskey described the project as a roughly 16,450‑square‑foot, three‑story building with 12 one‑ and two‑bedroom residential units, retail and office space, a rooftop garden and a basement for storage and mechanical systems. He said 17 parking spaces were provided, matching the number required by code for the residential and commercial spaces.
Tomaskey noted one outstanding technical noncompliance: an elevator bulkhead height listed at 54 feet, where the district allows 50 feet; he said the bulkhead had been approved previously at the zoning level. The applicant reported that engineering review had confirmed sewer, water and stormwater capacities and that a zoning approval had already been obtained.
The board waived reading of the public notice, opened the hearing, gave the public time to speak (no speakers came forward), closed the hearing and voted to approve the application; the vote was unanimous on the recorded roll call.
What the board recorded The board’s approval followed the applicant’s presentation and a motion to close the public hearing. Board members asked no substantive follow‑up questions and directed planning staff to prepare the approval resolution.
Next steps Planning staff will prepare the approval resolution and notify the applicant and the town zoning office of the board’s action.
