Greenwood Pool demolition nears completion; pavilion bids, gate and maintenance remain unsettled

The CVE Steering Committee on May 26 heard that demolition work at Greenwood Pool is wrapping up but crews uncovered a failing underground drainage structure that requires a change order, delaying final closure of construction work.
A staff member said contractors have reinstalled the fence and swing gate and are completing patchwork. “The fencing is in as of Friday,” the staff member reported, and the contractor is addressing remaining patches and the drainage repair.
Committee members pressed for clarity on public access between the pool and the planned Greenwood Pavilion. A committee member noted the swing gate that will connect the pool area to the pavilion and asked whether pavilion users could access the pool when the pool is closed. Staff said the swing gate will serve only as an exit; pool re-entry will require the monitored main entrance. “The swing gate will only be an exit and will be locked similarly to the main entrance of the pool outside of normal operating hours,” the staff member said.
Staff also said the pavilion itself will be available for use when the pool is closed but that pavilion users will not have direct access to the pool without passing through the monitored entrance used by staff.
Bids for the pavilion are open June 4; staff said an addendum issued that day included minor design changes and the addition of reused bike racks. Lighting is listed as an alternate on the bid and may depend on available budget. Staff urged transparency with the conservation commission as design changes are finalized.
Committee members and staff discussed who will maintain the pavilion and adjacent grounds once construction is complete. Staff said lifeguards currently handle day-to-day cleaning inside the gated pool area, a custodian (split between the pool and other sites) handles larger cleaning tasks, and the Department of Public Works (DPW) manages lawn mowing and trash collection as part of municipal grounds. The committee advised continuing conversations about whether the youth commission or a youth center director will assume oversight or remain in an advisory/oversight role.
The project next steps include completing the drainage repair change order, opening bids on June 4, and finalizing maintenance and staffing arrangements following contract awards and construction completion.
