During public comment at the Nov. 4 Village of Valley View council meeting, resident Mike Dzek raised a safety complaint about the village garbage truck fleet.
Dzek said he had previously raised the issue in July and provided service director Harter with replacement plugs. He told council he called six municipalities that confirmed use of the plug on their trucks and that the truck manufacturer ships the truck without the plug installed and expects the purchaser to install it. "The liquids coming from the truck are a hazard and there is always stuff falling out of the truck because the plug isn't in place," Dzek said.
Service Director Harter and Dzek discussed the operational trade-offs of using the plug, and Dzek suggested the village consider switching to an automatic side loader (ASL) truck if crew practices prevent reliable plug use. Harter acknowledged the conversation but no formal directive or timeline to install plugs or change equipment was recorded in the minutes.
Council did not take formal action on the matter during the meeting; the exchange ended as council moved on to agenda votes and reports.
