Cushing Selectboard signs special town meeting to seek $52,000 for transfer station; approves paving and cemetery work

The Cushing Selectboard on Aug. 26, 2024 signed a special town meeting warrant that will ask to take $52,000 from undesignated funds to cover costs related to the Waldoboro transfer station. The board also accepted a $21,000 bid for paving Killeran Lane and authorized tree trimming at Norton and Pleasant View cemeteries; several items including fire-station engineering and an IT/harbormaster plan were tabled for later consideration.
The meeting, called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Selectboard Chair Craig Currie, opened with routine business. The board approved 2024 Warrants #32 and #33 (motion Craig Currie; second Brian Soiett) and approved the minutes of the Aug. 12, 2024 meeting (motion Craig Currie; second Cheryl Stackpole); both motions carried 5-0-0.
On the warrant the board signed for a Special Town Meeting, staff member Lisa Young said the town will "ask to take $52,000 from undesignated funds to cover Waldoboro transfer station costs." Signing the warrant places the funding question on the special-meeting agenda; the transcript does not record a voter action or final expenditure at this meeting.
On procurement matters the Selectboard accepted a bid from Performance Paving to repave Killeran Lane for $21,000. The motion to accept the bid was made by Brian Soiett and seconded by Tracey Bally; the minutes record the motion as carried 5-0-0. The board noted it received no engineering bids for the town fire station and agreed to reissue that request in late fall.
The board authorized staff member Terry Melanson to trim trees at Norton and Pleasant View cemeteries. The motion was made by Cheryl Stackpole and seconded by Mike James and carried 5-0-0. The minutes record that Chair Craig Currie asked staff member Lisa Young to send proposed language for a dog-waste sign to David Taylor; that action was recorded as carried 5-0-0.
On IT and harbormaster issues the board tabled further action until the March town meeting. Austin Donaghy described a two-step IT approach: first complete infrastructure, security and a server, then consider replacing desktop computers; he said the town hopes to have ballpark numbers by December for the January budget.
Other notes in the minutes: the transfer-station update was tabled while Chair Currie plans to attend a Waldoboro meeting on Sept. 9; a list distinguishing town and state roads is available at the Town Office; the board signed a release deed for the Old Food Pantry property; Lisa Young said she would contact Maritime about locking a heating-fuel price for the town. The meeting adjourned at 6:59 p.m. (motion Craig Currie; second Tracey Bally), recorded as carried 5-0-0.
The Selectboard listed meetings for cemetery-committee work in early October and will reissue the fire-station engineering request in late fall. The special town meeting referenced in the minutes is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.; placing the warrant does not itself authorize spending without the special meeting’s action.
