Neighbors press for no-alcohol, quiet-hours signage at Crompton Park; committee backs signage order

Residents of the Green Island neighborhood told the Worcester subcommittee on Veterans Memorials, Parks, and Recreation that loud music, late-night parties and litter at Crompton Park have harmed nearby quality of life, and the committee recommended moving forward with signage and administrative action.

Councilor Satya Mitra presented a petition on behalf of the Green Island Neighborhood Group asking for signs at Crompton Park’s Canton Street entrance reading "no alcohol allowed," "no loud music," and saying the park closes at 10:00 p.m. Maureen Schwab, who identified herself as vice president of the Green Island Neighborhood Group and a Canton Street resident, said parties have disturbed children and residents and cited weekend “takeovers” that drew police responses. “We do not want to hear this. The park does close at 10PM and that's a solid rule that's been in effect for years,” Schwab said.

Patricia Hobbs, president of the Green Island Residence Group, described severe litter and smashed liquor bottles found during neighborhood cleanups and urged clearer signage. Commissioner Rob Antonelli said park-security staff have been instructed to secure gates earlier, that signage will be reviewed and updated, and that the department will coordinate with Worcester Police Department; he also asked residents to call WPD to log incidents.

Clerk AJ Pottle advised the committee that approving the signage order so the administration can prepare an order is the appropriate next step. The committee voted to recommend approval and to file the item; Councilors Bellata, Rivera and Chair John Frasola voted yes. The order asks the administration to install signage and implement enforcement steps as needed.
