Mamaroneck board adopts shade-structure policy prioritizing native tree planting

The Town Board adopted a shade-structure policy on Dec. 4 that directs town staff to prioritize living shade—planting trees—over built structures where feasible for town-owned properties, and to give preference to native tree species.
Meredith Robson (town administrator) described the policy as one piece of a broader set of Climate Smart Communities initiatives the town will introduce to meet its environmental goals. Robin, liaison to the Sustainability Collaborative, said priority should be given to tree planting and native species as the best means of providing shade and supporting local ecology.
The board moved to adopt the policy and approved it by voice vote. Officials said more environmental policies and resolutions are expected before January as the town presses toward Climate Smart Communities Silver status.
Implementation: the policy will guide consideration of shade in building projects and maintenance; staff will fold the standard into project planning and prioritize native species when feasible.
