The village board of trustees voted on Nov. 25 to send a resolution to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) requesting a study of the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Keeler Avenue (Route 127) near Daniel Warren Elementary School.
A trustee read draft resolution language asking NYSDOT to "recommend pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures" in the school zone and listed potential improvements to be studied, including signage, stop control, sidewalk widening and shifting the parking lane. The trustee said the intersection is a major route to the school and experiences high levels of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Diana Riley, a Safe Routes to Schools representative, told the board the study is an appropriate first step and said a four-way stop was "one of the biggest priorities of the parents," though she emphasized that NYSDOT must review and approve any changes. Board members discussed whether to place the items on the regular meeting agenda that evening or act at the work session; the board ultimately approved the resolution by voice vote.
The resolution directs village staff to request NYSDOT conduct the study; the board did not specify a timeline for NYSDOT's response or for implementation of any recommended measures.
