Larchmont police and fire chiefs urge safety as holiday season begins

Lieutenant Knudsen told the board the police department held a Coffee with a Cop event and several scam-education talks for seniors, with about 70 attendees at one event and 45 at a library session. He provided enforcement statistics on gas-powered leaf-blower complaints and summonses: in 2023 there were 150 complaints and 71 summonses, and in 2024 through Nov. 15 there were 147 complaints and 91 summonses. Knudsen also warned residents about overnight vehicle entries targeting key fobs and noted an attempted burglary to steal fobs; he urged residents to use post offices when mailing checks to reduce mail theft risk.

The fire chief reported several large brush fires in the region that produced smoke and prompted many 911 calls; local firefighters responded quickly to a Sherwood Avenue brush fire and limited damage. The chief reaffirmed a governor-issued burn ban and a red-flag warning "at least until November 30," and asked residents to avoid open flames outdoors, keep leaf piles off travel lanes and hydrants, follow safe turkey-frying procedures, and not reset smoke detectors until crews arrive.

Both chiefs encouraged residents to attend upcoming community safety events and to follow posted guidance; no new ordinances or department requests for the board were recorded in the meeting.
