The McKinleyville Community Services District board on June 3 approved a new public‑art program designed to encourage community‑driven artwork in district parks and facilities. Parks and Recreation Director Christian Med presented a program and application process intended for murals, painted utility boxes, recreation‑themed artwork and indigenous artwork where appropriate.
Staff said potential initial locations include Pearson Park restrooms, Pillar Park and the McKinleyville BMX Training Park. The process requires projects be reviewed by the Parks & Recreation Committee, with final approval retained by the board. The program encourages collaboration with schools, community groups and tribal organizations and includes guidance on artist selection, application requirements and a clause that long‑term maintenance responsibilities should be identified before project approval; staff indicated applicants may be asked to assist with touch‑ups, graffiti removal and protective coatings.
