Union City approves $5,000 quote to repair sinkhole and storm pipe at Municipal Lot #1

Union City Borough Council voted July 23 to accept a $5,000 quote from Mansfield to repair, replace and reconnect pipe at a sinkhole in Municipal Lot #1. The motion, made by Councilor James Kerns and seconded by Councilor Steadman, carried unanimously.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips told council crews had placed dye in a storm drain near Hogan's Alley and observed the dye entering sanitary lines that run to Municipal Lot #1; he is arranging camera inspection of the line, including up to the area near the Salvation Army. The council reviewed two quotes: McLallen Construction at $6,800 and Mansfield at $5,000. The borough will provide pipe and fittings (record notes a cost to the borough of $5,000 for those materials); the motion to accept Mansfield's quote was made pending no other problems discovered.
Why it matters: the sinkhole and associated sewer connections pose infrastructure and public-health risks if storm and sanitary lines are compromised. The contract award is a near-term, limited-cost repair intended to stabilize the site while further inspections continue.
What’s next: staff will proceed with the contracted work and continue camera inspection of the storm/sanitary line to determine whether further repairs or additional work is required.
