Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate approved at the previous meeting has not been reachable and that he suspects the person is no longer interested.
Pernice said he will reach back to the consortium that supplied candidates, that there are 32 candidates on the list, and that he will coordinate with the Civil Service Commission to schedule oral exams and send out letters to candidates. He said his long-term goal remains hiring two part-time officers, but that only one position had been approved by council; council members agreed to continue the search for that single approved part-time officer.
The chief’s update was provided as an informational report; no formal vote was required. The council conducted routine approvals of the agenda, minutes, secretary’s report and bills earlier in the meeting before moving to the chief’s staffing update and other borough business.
