Staff explained that the extension follows public-procurement/ODE rules after an RFP and subsequent one-year extension term. Sodexo's lead local manager and staff remain in the community serving meals; board members praised local Sodexo employees and local sourcing the vendor supports. The contract increase was described as reasonable in light of rising costs.
Several board members and staff discussed strategic alternatives. Points raised included kitchen capability (many kitchens are configured for reheating rather than full scratch cooking), compliance and administrative workloads (USDA/OD requirements), cost comparisons when district employees would require benefits, and the difficulty and likely expense of retrofitting large campuses. One board member asked staff to prepare a detailed cost comparison — including equipment upgrades, staffing and benefits, and compliance resources — to inform a future decision about whether to continue contracting or to bring food services in-house.
The board moved, seconded, and approved the one-year contract extension for 2026–27. Staff said they will perform a cost-out and present options during the next budget cycle.
