Union City approves $22,295 repair for sinkhole, will replace 24-inch clay tile

Union City Borough Council voted Aug. 13 to hire Mansfield to repair a sinkhole at Municipal Lot #1, approving a $22,295 contract to replace a 24-inch clay tile, reconnect pipes, install a larger catch basin and replace approximately 10 feet of pipe.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips reported that a 68-foot section toward the Municipal Authority pipe bottom had failed and that the manhole in the other direction remained covered. Insight consultant Bob Carpenter recommended lining the pipes in sections; borough engineer Tim Wells also offered suggestions. The recommendation presented to council was to replace the 24-inch clay tile in the sinkhole area, reconnect all pipes there to the 24-inch line, replace the adjacent catch basin with a larger unit and replace about 10 feet of pipe.
Two estimates were on the table: Mansfield at $22,295 and McLallen Construction at $23,450. Both proposals required the borough to provide a truck during the work. Councilor Steadman moved and Councilor Osborn seconded the motion to award the work to Mansfield; the motion carried unanimously.
Council did not at the meeting specify a start date; Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips and the contractor will coordinate scheduling and the borough must provide a truck during construction.
