Dedham selectmen award winter sand contract, set ordinances for upcoming meetings

The meeting opened at 5:29 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call of Selectmen Timothy Scribner, Paul Miller and Richard Leavitt. The board unanimously adopted the minutes of the July 2 meeting.
Selectmen accepted departmental reports presented by Fire Chief Zack Cronkhite, Treasurer Michelle Fish, Animal Control Officer Ann Greenlaw and Alexandria Treworgy (CEO/LPI). The board then approved the listed payables and payroll warrants as prepared.
In Old Business, the board recorded that the Green Lake Bridge was considered substantially completed on July 15, 2025, but noted some interior work remains once water levels drop; the town has retained $25,000 pending that work. The board reviewed a draft Short‑Term Rental application; a final version will be released in the coming months to encourage compliance before the 2026 season.
Under New Business, Road Commissioner Craig Hamilton reported plans to recoat the interior of the salt/sand shed, obtain pricing to pave Upper Dedham Road and complete ditching in priority areas. The town solicited three bids for winter sand; "Motion to award the bid to Whitmore Contracting for $15/yard" was recorded and the motion carried (2–1–0). The meeting minutes list the motion’s mover and seconder on the record; individual votes beyond the tally are not specified in the minutes.
The board agreed to present a "Property Tax Benefits for Municipal Volunteers" ordinance at the Special Town Meeting scheduled for Sept. 4, 2025, and to consider a recreational marijuana sales ordinance at the regular Town Meeting in June 2026. The Selectmen also approved an updated Fees Policy (unanimous vote).
The Brookside Cemetery Corporation asked whether it could transfer the Brookside cemetery to town ownership because of limited funds and no remaining lots for sale; Treasurer Michelle Fish said she will work with the corporation and bring updates to the board. The meeting adjourned at 6:09 p.m.
What’s next: The Special Town Meeting is scheduled for Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m.; the Selectmen will return on Aug. 21. Officials said they will circulate the finalized Short‑Term Rental application in advance of the 2026 season.
