Nathan, the district’s athletic representative, reported on spring sports at the June 15 Solon Springs board meeting: four runners advanced from regionals with three reaching the state meet; Alyssa Fossum finished 11th in the 200, Emily Burfield placed sixth in the 800, and Jacob Taggart was state runner-up in the 800. The softball team finished 23–4, won their regional bracket and reached the sectional rounds; individual postseason honors included Valencia Burfield (honorable mention), Kendall Nelson and Matthew Johnson (second team), and Audrey Swanson and Harper Martinelli (first team), with Martinelli named player of the year in the conference.
Nathan also described operational issues when sectional finals are hosted by participating schools. He said athletic directors must submit an online form to the WIAA to request hosting and noted WIAA typically awards hosting rights to schools that apply; he suggested discussing whether the district or the coop partner would pursue hosting sectional events to reduce travel and competitive advantage for visiting hosts.
Nathan noted fall-sports and onboarding logistics: the district awarded 77 varsity letters across spring sports, is transitioning systems for fall registration and has a fall-sports meeting set for Aug. 3 at 5 p.m.
The board did not take a formal vote on hosting strategy but recorded Nathan’s recommendation for future consideration.
