Ventnor City honors Gerald J. Schaefer; commission adopts retirement resolution

The Ventnor City Commission on June 11 honored Gerald J. ("Jerry") Schaefer and voted unanimously to accept his retirement effective June 30, 2026.
Mayor Creable presented a plaque and read a resolution that traced Schaefer’s career from special patrolman in 1974 to full-time patrolman in 1978, promotions to sergeant in 1983 and lieutenant in 1989, and his tenure as chief of police beginning in March 1991. The mayor noted Schaefer later returned to public service as a communications operator and said the city appreciates "your over 50 years of dedicated service." Mayor Creable added that dispatch is a "behind the scenes" job that ensures first responders are where they need to be.
The commission pulled Resolution 2026-172 from the consent agenda for the honor and then moved and seconded the measure; a roll-call vote recorded Commissioner Langra, Commissioner Mento and Mayor Creable as voting yes. No negative votes or abstentions were recorded.
Schaefer, joined in the chamber by family and several honored guests including former Chief Mike Miller and former Mayor Chryser, accepted the recognition. The resolution notes Schaefer’s career milestones and thanks him for his service to the city, its residents and visitors. The commission did not take further action on related personnel matters at the meeting.
The commission adjourned at the close of the session following routine business.
