Selectboard authorizes up to $25,000 to purchase replacement Harbormaster boat

The Castine Selectboard on Jan. 21 approved a motion to spend up to $25,000 to purchase a replacement Harbormaster boat and outfit it for harbor operations.
Harbormaster Scott Vogell told the board the Harbor Committee has reviewed a 2023 17' Mako for sale at Port Harbor Marine priced at $19,995 with roughly 90 engine hours. Vogell said the boat is in good condition and would serve as a replacement for the current Harbormaster vessel; estimated additional costs for bottom paint and installing the existing electronics are about $1,200. The committee has been searching for a suitable replacement for several years, Vogell said.
Chair Roberta Boczkiewicz moved to authorize the purchase and outfitting up to $25,000; Dan Leader seconded. The Selectboard voted unanimously 3-0. The motion authorizes funds to include purchase price and modest outfitting costs; the manager and harbor committee will coordinate final purchase logistics and outfitting.
The board recorded the authorization as an immediate capital expenditure within the harbor fund; no further appropriations were voted at the meeting. The Harbormaster noted the boat would also be useful for coordinated water‑rescue work with the Fire Department.
