Township to centralize vehicle maintenance; committee discusses fire apparatus repairs

The committee discussed consolidating vehicle maintenance into a single set of subaccounts so the township can track and fund repairs for public-works vehicles, police cars and fire apparatus.
"So we were thinking that maybe we could create a whole separate vehicle maintenance and then have sub accounts for public works, police, and fire," finance officer Lorraine England said, explaining the plan to combine tracking while preserving departmental detail. She said police currently budget about $9,000 for vehicle maintenance and that DPW and fire needs would be incorporated.
Members flagged recent problems with a pumper: a member reported shop findings that the unit had a significant fuel/oil issue and that the pump may need replacement; "65% fuel in the in the engine," one member said of a diagnostic finding, and the committee discussed sending the unit for repair this month.
Some members also addressed the scope of township maintenance of fire buildings and equipment, noting the distinction between township-owned stations and fire-department-owned buildings and agreeing to clarify responsibilities before expanding maintenance support.
Next steps: staff will establish a vehicle-maintenance subaccount structure to segregate parts and labor by department, obtain detailed cost estimates for the pumper repair, and review the fire department's budget and needs at the next budget meeting when fire representatives will attend.
