Covington council approves routine measures, OKs internet and phone contract; amphitheater purchase set for third reading

Covington Village Council voted on a suite of routine resolutions at its May 4, 2026 meeting, approving contracts and housekeeping items and scheduling further consideration of an amphitheater purchase.
The most consequential approvals included Resolution R11-26, authorizing an annual agreement with Duke's Root Control Inc. for root control in sewer lines; Resolution R12-26, allowing the village administrator to apply for a UVMC grant for Schoolhouse Park improvements; and Resolution R25-26, authorizing an agreement with Uniti Solutions to provide the village's internet and phone services. The minutes record that each of these resolutions passed on motions that recorded "All ayes." The Spectrum internet and phone contract was noted as being month-to-month until Uniti Solutions completes installation.
Council also approved Resolution R17-26 to participate in national cooperative purchasing contracts through OMNIA Partners and Resolution R14-26, a routine annual declaration to proceed under the alternative tax document format required by Ohio Revised Code Section 5705.281 for submission to the Miami County Budget Commission. The council approved Resolution R24-26 to designate Fiscal Officer Lisa Cavender to receive the public-records training required under Ohio Revised Code Sections 109.43(B) and 149.43(E)(1). In each case the minutes record the maker and seconder of the motion and state "All ayes."
One item remains pending: Resolution R19-26, to approve purchase of construction design plans, materials and construction of an amphitheater for Schoolhouse Park via OMNIA Partners, was at second reading; the council scheduled a third reading for May 18, 2026 and did not vote on it at this meeting.
Village Administrator Jordan Hodges provided brief administrative updates before the votes, including a reminder to vote on May 5, a notice that the Schoolhouse Parks Rocks festival is scheduled for May 15–16, and that village offices will be closed May 25 for Memorial Day. The minutes record no public visitors, no comments from the police chief or elected officials, and no executive session. The meeting was called to order by President Martin Leistner at 7:00 p.m. and adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
