Cherokee Village council flags rising waste and landfill fees, asks residents to report illegal dumping

Mayor Steven R. Rose told the Cherokee Village City Council on March 20 that Waste Connections applied a 3.11% cost increase tied to the consumer-price index, which he estimated would add roughly $2.02 per unit per quarter and noted the current contract runs through the end of 2025.
Rose also reported that Cherokee Village Landfill raised tipping rates by 6.6% effective Jan. 1, 2025. He said the landfill increase appeared to be contributing to a local trend of roofing shingles and other construction material being dumped on back roads and urged residents to contact City Hall if they see illegal dumping.
The council did not take a formal vote on the rate changes; Rose presented the information as an operational and budgetary update and reminded residents of the city’s 10% discount on per-unit pricing under the current Waste Connections arrangement. No additional mitigation or ordinance was proposed at the meeting.
The council also discussed related operational costs in the finance report, including Street Department revenue, but did not adopt new spending measures at the March 20 meeting. Residents seeking to report dumping or to ask about waste billing were directed to contact City Hall.
