Board authorizes brief Main Street closure for Pumpkinfest 5K

The Newcastle Select Board voted May 12 to authorize a temporary Main Street closure to allow a Pumpkinfest 5K to run past the town’s pumpkin displays.
Organizer Mike Lee described a route that would start at the town office, run down Main Street past the pumpkins, then turn off near the Baptist Church into back streets and finish at Elm Street Plaza. Lee said volunteers and the sheriff’s office have discussed safety measures and that the organizers aim to limit closures to about 10 minutes to reduce commuter disruption. The board’s motion authorizing the sheriff’s office to close Main Street temporarily was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote.
Board members said they expect signage and traffic control and encouraged the organizers to finalize route details and participant pre-registration; Lee noted similar local 5Ks draw between about 80 and several hundred participants and that organizers planned a registration tent using town parking spaces. The board welcomed the plan and wished organizers luck with the event.
