The Newcastle Select Board on May 12 approved a one-year street-vendor license for Mallerie Haplin, who plans to operate a food truck near Louis Doe’s U-Haul lot and serve tacos, fried seafood and hand-cut fries.
Haplin told the board she will source local seafood and rotate menu items, and said, “there will be tacos. Yes, tacos every day.” She confirmed she has the required state registrations and that a portable toilet is available within the required distance of the service area. The transient-sellers and lunch-wagon ordinance requires evidence of state licensing, limits operations off Route One and sets the license to expire Dec. 31, 2025.
Board members asked staff to confirm compliance with the 2017 local ordinance and health inspection requirements; the manager and code-enforcement staff confirmed the existing portable toilet complies with state license standards. The motion to approve the street-vendor application was moved by Rufus and seconded by Tom; it passed by voice vote.
Haplin said she hopes to start June 1 and is arranging an independent power hookup to avoid affecting the neighboring business’s electrical system. The board offered assistance if she encounters delays with Central Maine Power.
