Council reviews proposed modernization of engineering design standards

The Mannik and Smith Group presented a comprehensive update to Plain City’s engineering design standards on March 9, proposing that technical standards be moved from the Zoning Code into an administrative manual that staff could update more efficiently.
Consultant Rhett Rosengarten said the revised standards reflect current industry specifications, concentrate on roadway and stormwater criteria (with water and sanitary sewer handled by MOWSD) and are intended to standardize drawings and construction methods. Council members welcomed the modernization but flagged a specific inaccuracy related to the Fire Department that Rosengarten said would be corrected prior to final adoption. President T. Harriman suggested replacing the term "Village" with "municipality" in some places to accommodate future status changes; staff agreed to review language and external references to avoid future conflicts when outside documents are amended.
No vote was taken; staff and the consultant will incorporate corrections and return the draft for final consideration.
