Commission continues siding replacement application for 144 East 2nd Avenue

The Italian Village Commission voted to continue an application to replace siding at 144 East 2nd Avenue after staff reported the building’s primary elevations show signs of age and some historic nail patterns, but also scattered replacement boards.
Sophie Bogle, a commission staff member, told the commission that a site visit on 5/21/2026 found "evidence of advanced age, particularly on the primary elevation and the east facing elevation," and that staff "encourages the repair of the board and siding on the original structure" while recommending continuation of application COA2600254 so the applicant can revise the proposal to match city code and Italian Village guidelines.
Applicant Edward Kavanagh said he understood the need to target the rot and described plans to mark the highest point of decay on each elevation. Commissioners pressed for clarification about whether battens must be removed to make straight cuts and asked that the applicant supply photos and sketches showing the proposed bandboard and the height of repairs on each elevation. A staff member asked the applicant to return with graph-paper elevations showing the widths and the heights of repairs to help the commission judge whether patching would preserve the historic appearance.
The commission voted on a motion to continue COA2600254 so the applicant can provide the requested documentation; the motion carried without recorded names for the yes/no tally.
Next steps: the applicant will submit photos, measured elevation sketches showing the proposed cutoff heights for repairs, and details of any proposed battens or flashing for staff review before returning to the commission.
