Selectmen discuss transferring animal control to Knox County, plan road repairs and review paramedic agreement

At the Cushing selectmen meeting on Dec. 12, Selectman Daniel Staples reported he had contacted Tim Carroll of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office about the town’s animal-control responsibilities. Staples told the board that, beginning the first of the year, the sheriff’s office is expected to take over animal-control duties for Cushing. He said the overall cost to the town should be about the same but that coverage would likely improve; Staples also said the sheriff’s office believes it can reduce the animal-care facility fee. Staples noted the town could withdraw from the arrangement at any time if the board determines it is not working for Cushing.
Selectman Laurie Haynes raised a resident complaint that a large vehicle was being damaged while traveling on Spear Mill Road; she observed what she believed to be a culvert issue and offered to show the location to Chairman Alton Grover. Grover told Haynes that if funds are available in the spring the town will plan to hot-top the affected area on Spear Mill Road.
Town Clerk Lisa Young reported on a paramedic intercept agreement with the Town of Warren. The minutes state that MMA recommended adding a reference to the Maine Tort Claims Act to the agreement; Selectman Daniel Staples said he would contact Warren to follow up. On the Municipal Review Committee Board of Directors ballot, Selectman Daniel Staples said he would consult Selectman Martha Marchut because of her experience on the Transfer Station Committee.
The items were discussed as unfinished or new business; no formal votes on the animal-control arrangement, road repairs or the paramedic agreement were recorded in the minutes. The board did, however, take separate motions on warrants, minutes and personnel/pay actions later in the meeting.
