Commissioners authorize July 1–5 fireworks discharge in unincorporated Finny County
Summary

The Finny County Board of County Commissioners voted June 15 to waive a provision of the county’s fireworks resolution and allow the discharge of consumer fireworks in unincorporated areas from July 1 through July 5 between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.
Fire Chief John Ersk recommended the waiver after staff analysis cited measurable recent rainfall and forecasts that reduced immediate fire danger in much of the county; staff noted the county remains in longer-term drought classifications. Chief Ersk told the board staff recommends the waiver but will continue to monitor conditions and can return the matter if conditions worsen.
During discussion, commissioners voiced competing concerns. Some urged shortening the permitted span to three days to reduce stress on veterans and pets and to limit law enforcement calls; others emphasized tradition tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary and the importance of family celebrations. Commissioner Schultz and other commissioners noted the fire department plans increased education and patrolling during the July period.
After debate, a motion to approve the waiver was made and passed by voice vote. A dissenting commissioner recorded a “nay.” The waiver applies only to unincorporated Finny County and is subject to rescission if weather or fire conditions change.
