Thayne EMS reports 205 page-outs in 2017; town advised on volunteer pay rules

Merritt said several people may enroll in an EMT-basic class beginning Jan. 22, 2018, and that Thayne EMS met with dispatch and other agencies, including Search and Rescue. She said Search and Rescue advised that EMS members would need proper winter attire to participate safely in joint searches; Merritt said the service may purchase winter gear for some EMTs.
Mayor A. DeLand Lainhart told the council the town had been contacted by the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services after an inquiry about W-2 status from an EMS member. "As of now, if any EMT receives money they are not considered a volunteer," Lainhart said, describing the department's guidance. The council did not record any immediate policy change at the meeting; the matter appears to require administrative follow-up to confirm volunteer status and payroll classification.
What happens next: The town listed payroll and workers-compensation items in the meeting vouchers and did not vote on changes to EMS compensation during the Jan. 18 meeting.
