South Bloomfield approves police pay raise and hears department plans for mutual aid, equipment

The South Bloomfield Village Council unanimously approved action on police pay during its Jan. 21, 2025 meeting, moving to approve the ordinance’s first reading and waiving additional readings to pass it as an emergency. The motion was made by Councilmember Tom Ramsay and carried with unanimous support from council members.
Chief Michael Maynard provided operational updates for the department: he said he organized the first Northern Pickaway County chiefs meeting on Jan. 15 to discuss a proposed memorandum of understanding among Ashville, South Bloomfield and Commercial Point that would allow the agencies to assist one another during critical incidents or when units are tied up. He asked that a couple of council members agree to serve on a promotions board expected in June to fill two sergeant positions.
Chief Maynard said Officer Pelfrey is inventorying purchased and seized firearms and ammunition with plans to trade in unneeded items so the department can standardize on common firearms and ammunition. Two cruisers ordered from Shorkey Auto should arrive in early February and be outfitted by Parr by the end of March. Sgt. Wells designed a new daily uniform patch, which has been ordered and will be replaced on uniforms by Parr. Maynard also said the department completed a thorough office cleaning and reorganization.
On Jan. 17, the Pickaway County sheriff’s office used the Flock system to detect and stop a southbound vehicle on U.S. 23; Chief Maynard said that once South Bloomfield installs its own Flock system, village officers will be able to access that information directly rather than relying on the sheriff’s office.
Chief Maynard additionally reported that Angel Canterbury had to withdraw her candidacy for police officer for personal reasons; no appointment occurred on Resolution 2025-03.
The council did not record further debate about implementation details, budget impacts or timeline for the MOU during the meeting. Mayor Thomas and council may address follow-up tasks in upcoming sessions.
