Otisfield committee seeks $75,000 solar grant, plans heat-pump installs at town buildings

Darryl Johnson, speaking for Otisfield’s Resilience Committee, told the Select Board on May 6 that electricity use on town properties rose about 35% from January 2025 through March 2026, largely because of the expanded fire station. The committee plans to submit a grant request on June 5 proposing the full $75,000 for a solar array to serve town facilities.

Maine Solar Solutions assessed town buildings and recommended beginning with 30 panels on the transfer station and 20 panels on the town garage, with future expansion possible. Johnson described a separate program option for non-profits that could allow private-pay routes and tax credits if requirements are met. S. Burnham indicated she intends to submit the grant application but will do so "contingent upon the town's approval."

Separately, Maureen Howard briefed the board on Grant 5 project coordination for heat-pump installations: Ecoheat is scheduled to install heat pumps at the town garage, transfer station and community hall; Acadia Insulation scheduling remains pending; Prostream Plumbing and Heating will need to be scheduled. Howard also suggested considering a hybrid hot-water heater for the town office that could be purchased from the town's recently created Energy Fund; Brendan Bedell will contact the town plumber to verify Efficiency Maine certification for installations.

Board members were advised that, for the town to commit funding, a warrant-article vote would be required. A draft proposal must be completed by May 27 for possible placement on a warrant.
