The Chebeague Island School Committee met in regular session Aug. 23, 2022, at 6:05 p.m. and took several administrative and facilities actions for the upcoming school year.
The committee approved the meeting agenda on a motion by Elizabeth Doughty, seconded by Nancy Earnest; the motion passed 4-0-0. Courtney Doughty moved to approve minutes from Aug. 2, 2022; Nancy Earnest seconded and the motion passed 4-0-0.
On a motion by Courtney Doughty, seconded by Elizabeth Doughty, the committee authorized payment of $4,795 from the school’s Capital Reserve Account to purchase a water-treatment filtration system. The motion passed 4-0-0. Committee members toured the furnace room after the meeting to view the newly installed filtration system and the new oil tank; the transcript notes the oil tank is not yet hooked up to the furnace.
Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick reported logistical preparations for the school year: three staff workshop days are planned and will be communicated to staff; AM boat service to the school is scheduled to start the next day and PM boat service will begin after Labor Day (exact date not specified). She also said the Portland Press Herald called regarding water and mediation steps the school has taken. The committee recorded receipt of a letter from the Nutrition Department of the Maine Department of Education notifying the district that a food-services review will take place, with a site visit scheduled for April 10, 2023.
In old business the committee reviewed COVID-19 protocols for the new school year: the district will issue a weekly Friday update on county infection rates using a color-code metric that will determine whether indoor masking is required; daily cleaning of surfaces and bathrooms will continue. Lead Teacher Sarah Klein raised concerns about afterschool programming and urged the committee to support Monday-through-Friday programming to meet the needs of working families.
Superintendent Kirkpatrick also outlined annual goals including completion of two Department of Education reviews (special education and child nutrition), a review of the three-year curriculum cycle for science and social studies, and drafting safety protocols for the school. Three warrants were presented for review and signature. The committee adjourned at 7:07 p.m.
