Chebeague Island School discusses summer mowing, landscaping and declines Pre‑K partnership opportunity

During the April 23 meeting the Chebeague Island School Committee discussed summer grounds care and grant opportunities tied to early childhood infrastructure.
Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick reported she had spoken with Genaro B. about mowing school lawns as he had done last summer and that the town, recreation department and school continue to discuss responsibility for mowing the ball field. A committee member contacted a private mowing company; the committee directed the superintendent to reach out to interested contractors and decide on mowing arrangements for the 2024 summer.
Kirkpatrick said she will contact Tracy Ames about tending the flower beds and trimming nests from trees near the school. The committee also reviewed internal procedures for grants: Heather Neal, the school business manager, handles grant writing and tracks receipts for drawdown and uploads budgets to the Maine Department of Education; unspent grant funds roll over to the next year.
Members and staff signed up to learn more about a Maine Department of Education outreach to districts about Pre‑K support for 4‑year‑olds but determined Chebeague Island School does not qualify because the program targets districts needing infrastructure improvements (classroom furnishings, playground equipment, buses) that CIS does not require.
