Chebeague Island school committee told there are over $218,000 in undesignated audit funds; allocation to be decided
Summary
Committee members were informed of more than $218,000 in undesignated funds from a recent audit and discussed options — retain up to 3% of the approved budget, transfer to reserves, or apply to next year’s tax requirement — with a follow-up discussion scheduled at the next meeting.

The Chebeague Island School Committee was notified April 9 that a recent audit identified more than $218,000 in undesignated funds, and members agreed to take up how to allocate that money at a future meeting.
The committee discussed three principal options presented in the minutes: retaining up to 3% of the approved budget without designating the remainder, moving funds into reserve accounts, or using the money to offset next year’s budget requirement for town taxpayers. Committee members asked staff to adjust budget lines and forward changes to the Town Manager for inclusion in the full town budget.
The committee did not make a final decision on allocation at the April 9 meeting. The minutes record that the topic will be taken up at the next school committee meeting and that a joint budget meeting with the Town Selectboard and the School Committee was scheduled for April 9, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hall; the committee’s next regular meeting was set for April 23, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at the Chebeague School.
Why it matters: undesignated audit funds can be used to reduce the amount the district must request from taxpayers or to strengthen reserve balances; the committee’s choice will affect the district’s short-term budget position and the amount requested in the next town budget process.
Next steps: The committee will revisit allocation at its next meeting and incorporate agreed budget-line changes into materials the Town Manager will include in the town budget.
