Chebeague Island School Committee schedules sustainability forum, reviews emergency plan

The committee noted correspondence from MSSA about a legislature bill addressing minimum wage for school personnel; Nancy Earnest also shared a punch list of outdoor projects and an email from the town manager requesting information to pay a contractor not on the school payroll.
The committee set a sustainability forum for Feb. 28 at the Chebeague Island School for parents of students and Kid’s Place attendees, with childcare available at the recreation center. The minutes also reference a broader community forum listed for March 16, 2026. On school safety, the committee reviewed a draft of the updated school emergency plan and agreed the next step is to invite the island safety chief and the Cumberland County Emergency Agency to tour the school and offer recommendations.
Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick reported the school ordered protective sunglasses for students to use at dismissal on April 8, 2024, when a solar eclipse will occur. Kirkpatrick also noted that student Ben Nadeau won first place in the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest, and said teachers are planning outings and events for students. A draft school calendar was reviewed and committee members discussed placement of teacher workshops; Kirkpatrick will meet with teachers to set timing for Island Institute workshops next year.
The committee went into executive session twice. At 6:58 p.m. the committee entered executive session under 1 M.R.S.A. §405(6)(D) to discuss labor contracts with the Chebeague Transportation Company; it returned at 7:23 p.m. with no action taken. At 7:24 p.m. it entered a second executive session under 1 M.R.S.A. §405(6)(A) for employment-related matters; the committee returned at 8:03 p.m. and again took no action. The meeting adjourned at 8:04 p.m.
