Select Board advises petition route for possible recreational marijuana sales opt-in

At the June 4 meeting the Town Administrator, Jennifer Roux, told the Select Board that an individual — a resident of Maine, as state law requires for petitioners — is drafting a petition to ask the Town of Acton to opt into recreational marijuana sales.
Roux said the petitioner has prepared the necessary identifying information that the town clerk will look for and was advised to proceed with the petition signature-gathering process rather than rely on an advisory referral from the board. "This petition is going to ask the Town of Acton to opt into recreational marijuana sales," Roux said, and she noted that the petitioner does not need to be an Acton resident to circulate the petition so long as they are a resident of Maine.
Roux told the board the petitioner has been advised about clerk requirements (name and address on the petition) and that the petition will be reviewed once presented. If the petition collects sufficient valid signatures, the question would appear on a ballot and voters would decide whether to opt in. The board did not take a formal position and directed no action beyond advising the petitioner to proceed through the statutory petition process.
